Chapter 23

The crisp night air felt great. There was something so invigorating at being able to just get out and about, travelling without a care in the world. I mean, technically I had the fate of an entire city district on my shoulders, but somehow that was easier to stomach than doing a single shift at my old jobs.

The freedom my new job gave me was truly the greatest perk of them all. Yes, I enjoyed the costumes, the powers, the drama and action, but honestly? The mere fact that I could just go take a nap whenever I wanted to was amazing. Did I ever have a chance to take that nap? Not a chance! But it was simply the freedom to do so that made me feel so much less…stressed.

It’s funny. Even though I could be locked in a life or death struggle with some costumed maniac, I just didn’t feel the same pressure that I did back when life was living from paycheck to paycheck. There was a freedom in this power. A freedom that was unmistakable.

“Alright, we’re in position,” Cannoneer said over the radio. He and Wizardess were hidden in the woods nearby, covering the front and back of the mansion. Their job was primarily to observe the situation and watch for any sign of Mimeo coming in. At least, for any sign of the real Mimeo. Duplicates were to be ignored until they attacked. If our target feared that this place was too hot, she might not show at all.

“Alright, now, we want to spook him, but not enough to get him to run,” I whispered to Kifaru.

“Ah yes, two men in strange costumes showing up on his doorstep in the middle of the night surely won’t cause him to run,” Kifaru replied back with a toothy grin.

I snickered and rang the doorbell. The great chime echoed throughout the entire manor, seemingly carrying on for minutes. But with a house of this size, it probably had to last a few minutes for anyone to hear it. “This is a really nice place,” I said, admiring the gargoyle door knocker.

“It reeks of new money. I do not believe the man came from wealth.”

“How do you know that?” I asked.

Kifaru pointed behind us, towards the large, fully colored tiger statue posed in a triumphant, eternal lunge. The statue was sitting off to the side and had nothing else around it. “People from old money have taste.”

“What’s wrong with the statue? I think it looks cool.”

Kifaru sighed at that. “The mighty tiger isn’t even centered properly. It’s an eye sore at best.”

The door creaked open, silencing us immediately. Kifaru’s opinion on exterior decoration placement would have to wait until later.

“Go away, costume men,” a maid said, her face half peeking out the door. She was middle-aged and looked terribly uncomfortable. “Master es no here!”

“You speak Spanish?” I asked her in her own tongue.

“Yes!” she replied, her eyes lighting up. “You are fluent?”

“Indeed,” I said, continuing the conversation in Spanish.
